INTRODUCTION - Petroleum Geochemistry Reports
Two reports based on organic geochemical analysis have been completed. The first is a regional source rocks study based on 38 wells from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Qatar, UAE and Oman. The second provides biomarker correlations between source rocks and oil residues from Iraqi wells.

PROJECT AIMS
The aims of the report are:
- To identify the main potential source rocks of the region and to assess their richness, maturity and the type of hydrocarbon likely to be produced.
- To model the burial history of the potential source rocks in order to assess time of generation and migration, both at the well data points and in the main potential generating areas.
- To place the geochemical results in the broader context of the petroleum geology to provide an appraisal of the Middle East province, both locally around the data localities and, by extrapolation, of the whole region from the Syria-Turkish border through Iraq to the Southern Gulf.
ANALYTICAL PROGRAM
Lithological logging
Basic mud log-style lithological logs were compiled by examination of the core and cuttings material from surface or near surface to total depth in 26 wells.
Geochemical analysis from surface to TD in 21 Key Wells
Based on the lithology logs, 21 wells were selected for screening from surface to TD for TOC content. All intervals with dark lithologies were analysed. All samples with TOC greater than 0.5% were then subjected to Rock-Eval style pyrolysis. Based on these results intervals were selected for more detailed analysis of kerogens by PYGC, and soluble extracts by GC and GCMS. Kerogen types were determined visually and maturity estimated from spore colour and vitrinite reflectance where possible. Carbon isotope analysis was also performed on selected intervals.
Geochemical analysis of selected intervals in 17 Subsidiary Wells
Based on the results from the key wells, intervals of interest were selected and geochemically analysed in a further 17 wells.

DIGITAL DATA
The numerical data (but not the gas chromatograms) are now available in Excel spreadsheet format.
TOTAL NUMBERS OF SAMPLES ANALYSED
975 sample intervals have been analysed from 38 wells. Samples range in age from Ordovician to Tertiary. A total of 924 samples were analysed for TOC of which 345 were further analysed by Rock-Eval pyrolysis; Solvent extract analyses were completed on 186 samples and 21 were further analysed by GCMS; Visual kerogen descriptions were completed for 231 samples; Vitrinite reflectance measurements were completed on 169 samples; Carbon isotope ratios were determined for 38 samples.
