SCOPE OF REPORTS
These reports provide a comprehensive description and interpretation of the lithology, facies, stratigraphy and diagenetic history of the main prospective sedimentary succession of Iraq and Syria. Reservoirs and seals are thoroughly documented, intervals with significant organic richness and oil shows are identified. Summaries of tectonic setting and other background information are also included. The results are placed in their broader context and exploration implications assessed, including discussion of established and new plays.
SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSES
The University of Reading Middle East Archive contains a vast number of thin sections made from core, cuttings and outcrop samples. The thin sections were prepared on the rig site for many of the wells at 5 or 10 feet intervals throughout the complete penetrated section. These have been examined and described using petrographic microscopes. New epoxy-impregnated thin sections have been prepared from core and cuttings samples over critical intervals. Selected intervals have also been analysed using palaeontology/palynology, SEM and XRD techniques.
REPORT FORMAT
The format of each report is similar. A detailed petrographic log is presented for each well at a scale of 1 inch : 100 feet, with an accompanying well report giving full documentation and interpretation of the petrographic and supplementary analyses, including numerous photomicrographs to illustrate typical lithofacies, porosity types and other significant features. The results from the individual wells are drawn together in a regional synthesis and interpretation volume which includes discussion of the implications for petroleum exploration. The regional synthesis is illustrated with well correlations, isopach and facies maps, depositional models, summaries of tectonic settings etc.
The first three petrographic reports on North Iraq and Syria were based entirely on cuttings and core samples without access to wireline logs. These logs and other well data were subsequently donated to the Reading Archive and were incorporated into the later reports. All the wireline logs have now been digitised (See Overview Report) and we are currently digitising all the lithological data. As part of this digitisation process the northern Iraq wells will be reinterpreted to tie into the wireline logs.

Sample and Data baseThe study is based on measured outcrop sections from locations in Northern and Western Iraq which form part of the University of Reading Middle East Archive. The Archive contains bed by bed field descriptions, plus thin sections and hand samples of the representative lithologies in each bed. The outcrop sections were originally measured, sampled and described, mostly in the 1950’s, by geologists of the Iraq Petroleum Company and were used, together with IPC well control, to establish the stratigraphy of Iraq as published in the Lexique Stratigraphic International (1959). Samples in the Reading Archive include most of the formation type sections described in the LSI. This new study will provide detailed logs and descriptions for these sections based on modern concepts of stratigraphy, lithofacies and basin development. This is the ninth study we have undertaken based on the Reading Archive. It compliments the earlier work by extending the regional picture from the Mesopotamian Basin margin, represented by the outcrops of the Western Desert of Iraq, through to the more distal portions of the basin, represented by the Zagros mountain outcrops. |
