What's New for 2008-09

  • Cenozoic Petroleum Geology of North Iraq (CZI)

  • Iraq Photomicrograph Library with Log and Image Viewer (LIV) LINK TO NEW WEB PAGE

We are currently working on two new products. Firstly, a report and dataset on the Cenozoic of North Iraq, based on new sedimentological and biostratigraphic analyses. Secondly, a new library of photomicrographs for Iraqi wells with an associated web-browser based log and image viewer. More information is given on the following CZI and LIV tab pages.

Report Title

Cenozoic Petroleum Geology of North Iraq

A regional synthesis based on new petrographic and biostratigraphic analyses in selected key wells.

Price & Date Price £25,000, Anticipated completion date - 2009
Contents Summary

Project Aims

1) To describe and illustrate the main lithofacies of the Cenozoic formations of North Iraq based on petrographic logged sections.

2) To refine the dating of the section based on nannofossil and microfossil content and review of the IPC microfossil interpretations.

3) Provide regional correlations to illustrate the form of the Cenozoic basin through time in North Iraq and generate facies and isopach maps.

4) Establish a sequence stratigraphic framework based on our analysis and review of the IPC stratigraphy and other published interpretations.

5) Review Cenozoic petroleum geology – reservoir potential, seal development, source rock maturity, hydrocarbon distribution, play fairways.

6) Review Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic structural history with reference to structural controls on facies development, and subsidence history/source rock maturity, timing of thrusting and trap formation.

  • New Petrographic logs and reports for four wells in North Iraq
  • More than 300 Photomicrographs
  • New biostratigraphic data for eight wells
  • Facies Maps, Isopach Maps & Correlation Panels

Delivery, format and price

The project is currently in progress. An initial data package will be available in 3 months. The final report will be completed in 9-12 months. The report will be in digital pdf format with an associated digital dataset. The pre-completion price is £25,000 payable in two equal portions of £12,500 on commitment and delivery.

INTRODUCTION

Less than 50% of the photomicrographs which were taken for our sedimentology studies were included in the final reports. This was due to the need to constrain the size and production costs of the reports in their original hard copy format. However, with the advent of digital formats, it is now possible to provide a dataset which includes all of the photomicrographs we have for Iraqi wells and measured outcrops sections.

WEB-BROWSER FORMAT

PGA Ltd has developed a web-page presentation format that enables the photomicrographs to be displayed beside the petrographic log using a web-browser such as Internet Explorer. This new display format makes it much easier to view and use the photomicrographs in context with the petrographic log.

THE PHOTOMICROGRAPH DATASET

The new dataset includes all the Iraq wells for which we have photomicrographs. Specifically, the wells from North Iraq Jurassic to Permian Report (1988), the North Iraq Cretaceous Report (1989), and the South Iraq Cretaceous Report (1994), and the Iraq exploration wells from the Paleozoic Report (1999). Images from outcrop sections studied in the Mesozoic Outcrops Report (2003) are also included, plus new images from the Cenozoic reservoir section at Kirkuk (not available in previous studies). The photomicrograph dataset currently comprises 4200 images from 38 Iraqi wells plus 1200 images from 6 measured sections.

PETROGRAPHIC LOG UPDATES

The petrographic logs currently provide coverage of 200,000ft of logged section in 32 wells and 6 outcrop sections with stratigraphic coverage from the Cenozoic to Ordovician. The logs from our early reports have been updated to include the wireline logs (which were not available when the original logs were prepared). Formation tops and stratigraphy have been updated to conform with our current interpretations. New logs are presented for the Cenozoic reservoir section in Kirkuk Field.

DELIVERY FORMAT AND PRICE

The project was completed in December 2009 and the Log & Image Viewer dataset is now available to licensees. The dataset is provided in both web-browser (html) and pdf format. It is supplied on DVD and therefore does not require internet access to run.

The dataset may be licensed for individual wells or for multiple wells. Please contact PGA for prices. Discounts are available to licensees of the related Sedimentological Reports.
